As for the commentary concerning the “controversy” surrounding this non-league friendly, let me just say the following things:

Hammers vs Sandy Springs FC Recap

I woke up this morning in great anticipation for the first game of my beloved Hammers’ 2016 season. I had organized a tailgate of about 30 people and was looking forward to spending the afternoon talking/watching soccer. I just knew the day was going to be perfect. Not too hot, sunny with a bit of cloud cover, and certainly no rain. Iconic local weatherman James Spann had a different idea about how my day would go. His morning weather forecast called for scattered showers hitting the metro area around 5-7 PM. Prime tailgating time and, of course, game time. I watched the radar throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. A big green mass of rain was coming our way. In desperation, I tweeted ol’ Mr. Spann and asked him if there was a chance all the rain would just disappear before it reached Birmingham. His response, “always a chance, but it looks wet.”

I’ll take my chances, thank you very much!

The Winding Path to Success: Chattanooga FC and the Birmingham Hammers

A Tale of Two Cities

Let’s take a trip back in soccer history, all the way to 2009. In its inaugural season in the NPSL, Chattanooga FC had a relatively slow start. However, heading into the late-season grind, CFC managed to put together nearly a month of undefeated league play. Not bad for the organization from the Scenic City.

Fantasy Starting XI: Birmingham’s All-Time Greats as Soccer Stars

We are in an alternative universe. Stay with me here… It’s 1930. The first ever World Cup is about to start the semifinal round. The U.S. Men’s National Team has steamrolled through the group stage, beating Belgium and Paraguay by a combined score of 6-0. Up next: South American power Argentina. After scoring the first official hat trick in World Cup history against Paraguay, Bert Patenaude replicates the feat against the Albicelestes, leading the USMNT to the finals against host country Uruguay. And once again, the Yank striker Patenaude scores the lone goal in a 1-0 USA victory. The team is welcomed back to New York as the crowned champions of the soccer world.

Hammers to be Tested Early in Inaugural NPSL Season

This week has been an important one in the brief history of the Birmingham Hammers soccer team. On Tuesday, the NPSL released the 2016 schedule for the Southeast Conference. There are 7 home matches and 6 road trips for the Boys in Red. The Hammers will be competing for several trophies along the way. From The Ground Up

It takes time to build something special. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Manchester United and Chelsea. Club America. The L.A. Galaxy (don’t laugh!) All of these teams had to start somewhere before they came to dominate the landscape of their respective markets. Eventually a club hits a tipping point. Fans fall in love with the team as it writes its respective chapter in the archives of the beautiful game.
